Student Voice and Representation

As part of our continuous quality improvement cycle, Monash Residential Services endeavours to provide students living on our residential facilities the opportunity to provide feedback on the facilities and services provided by Monash Residential Services. This is done in a number of ways including:

  • Orientation Week Surveys
  • First Year Interviews
  • Annual Exit Surveys
  • Representative opportunities on various MRS committees
  • Residents Meetings and Focus Groups

Berwick Residential plays a part in this consultative process by participating in all MRS central surveys, and by having representation on a couple of the MRS committees. Currently Berwick Residential has representation on the following committees:

MRS Operations Committee

Computer Committee

Each year a student volunteers’ to act as the Network Advisor for each MRS residential site. The Network Advisor is the contact point for all residents for the following:

  • Assist new residents in setting up of their PCs to operate on the Monash University Network.
  • Contact point for feedback or requests on computer and network related matters.
  • Contact point for MRS to feed information back to the residents about changes and/or improvements to the computer services provided.

The position is a volunteer one and each year we ask for students to express an interest in taking on this position for the following year.

House Meetings

Finally at Berwick we take the process of seeking feedback one step further. On a monthly basis our College Head, Deputy College Head and Resident Advisors hold House Meetings with all residents.

These meetings are conducted either by flat, by apartment or by floor in the case of our Hall of Residence.

The house meetings give the residents the opportunity to voice any concerns they have about their living environment; whether it be in relation to noise issues, issues of cleanliness in the common kitchens or providing feedback on the cleaning and general maintenance service provided around residences. The residents have also been known to make requests to make changes or additions to the Residential Activities and Pastoral Support Program, or to make general requests to management; i.e. a request was recently made for the purchase of some additional sporting equipment. As a result we now have a new sporting equipment cupboard in the pavilion common room, where the residents can borrow items such as; tennis racquets, soccer balls, AFL footballs, basketballs etc. for use by the residents around residences without cost.

It is generally a chance for the residents to have a talk about life a Res with like minded people; and most importantly information from these meetings is passed back to the Operational Staff and Management, giving them the opportunity to address any operational matters raised that may need further attention or action.
