Deakin Hall is named in honour and recognition of Alfred Deakin the second Prime Minister of Australia.

Alfred Deakin Australian politician, was a leader of the movement for Australian federation and later the second Prime Minister of Australia. In the last quarter of the 19th century, Deakin was a major contributor to the establishment of liberal reforms in the colony of Victoria, including the protection of rights at work. Deakin Hall has spacious student rooms, interesting residents from many different countries, a full program of social activities, and a reputation for being congenial. Residents enjoy its friendly, relaxed style. The oldest hall, Deakin has a very attractive common room with wireless internet and a picturesque courtyard. It has six kitchens, kitchenettes on most floors and a BBQ in the courtyard. Other facilities include a pool table, a table tennis table, a music room, two plasma television rooms, a large projector screen room with Foxtel/DVD equipped and a secure bicycle enclosure.

Residents represent different faculties of the university and come from a diverse range of cultures. The Residential Support Team, the Deputy College Head and the College Head provide ongoing advice and guidance to all residents and are involved in assisting new students adjust to the demands of university life.

At Deakin Hall the computer network and telephone connections are available in every student room at 1 Gb per sec. This allows residents to utilise the various programs and information available on site at any time of day or night.
